Kakuro for iPhone
Sums, and the
runs that make them.
A crossword built out of arithmetic. Fill every run with digits one to nine, never repeating inside a run, so each one adds up to the number in its clue. One solution, always, and the app will not let you finish a puzzle that had two.
How it plays
The rules you know, and no more app than that.
No streak to protect, no daily reward, no notification arriving at the moment you finally see it.
Candidates that know the arithmetic
Ask for the candidates on a run and you get the digits that can actually appear in it — a total of sixteen across three cells is only ever 1–6–9, 1–7–8, 2–5–9, 2–6–7, 3–4–9, 3–5–8 or 4–5–7. The app has done that sum before you have.
A run that cannot close
Put a digit where the rest of the run can no longer reach its total and the run tints rather than shouts — before you have built ten minutes of work on top of it. The same digit elsewhere in the crossing run lights up separately.
Three hints, and they teach
A hint does not fill in the cell you are stuck on. It shows you the run that can be closed from what is already on the board — usually a short one somewhere else, and usually the one you had stopped looking at.
Sideways
Turn it, and the grid turns with you.
Landscape is a different screen rather than the same one rotated: the runs take one side and the controls the other, so both thumbs reach without the grid shrinking to make room.
Levels
Four, and they mean what they say.
Difficulty is measured by the reasoning a puzzle actually requires, not by how large the grid is.
- Easy
- Runs with one possible set. A puzzle for a coffee.
- Medium
- Intersections, and sums that narrow each other.
- Hard
- Long runs, and elimination across a whole block.
- Expert
- Sparse clues and deep chains. An evening.
Every lokalt app
A quiet place to think — the same four places, the same promise, whichever puzzle you came for.
Sound and colour move together. There is not one audio file in the app: a filtered noise bed, a drone beneath it, and five bell voices on periods sharing no common multiple, so the pattern never comes round again inside a sitting. Pick a place — this page changes with it.
Forest
Wind through pine trees
Ocean
Waves along the shore
Mountain
Still air and distant weather
Desert
Dry air over open sand
